Welcome to the first post of the series 'Building the day-centre'.
As you may know from the previous post, Shalu arrived in Ghana at the beginning of August. A couple of weeks later, the construction of the day-centre finally started. Things are suddenly moving very fast..
Since the creation of the idea 'Peace Home' in 2019 and the build up since then, the dream has been building this day-centre for the youth with disabilities in and around Busua. A lot of hard work and a few delays later, Peace Home's dream is finally coming to life! Hopefully you are as excited as the Peace Home team and the community.
Let's start with Shalu and her father arriving at Accra in the first week of August. They immediately went to the project manager's house who put us in contact with the contractor for the day-centre, Delali. The organisation this project manager works for has built up many successful projects in Ghana and has been willing to give us advice.
Next Shalu and her father travelled to Busua and the contractor Delali followed soon after, arriving at Peace Home on August 23rd with his seven labourers.
In the two weeks before the arrival of the construction workers, the Peace Home team worked really hard on preparing the land and doing inquiries for all the required building materials.
The rooms on the top floor of the first building were prepared for the construction workers' arrival and they were welcomed with a home-cooked meal.
Immediately the morning after their arrival, at 6am, they started measuring the land and making an outline of the day-centre.
Seeing the true size the building is going to be was quite overwhelming..
Soon after, the digging of the foundation started. The team of Peace Home, the construction workers and people from the community put their strength together for this labouring job.
Soon, it became apparent that there is a huge amount of big stones in the ground of the land, making the digging very hard.
Nonetheless, the foundation was dug within three days!
During the work, the Peace Home team makes sure everyone has enough water, food and last but not least: music! This made the atmosfeer pleasant and fun. Everyone is excited about the building of Peace Home's day-centre! The community is showing their enthusiasm.
The Assembly Man had been visiting frequently with his committee members since the start of the construction at Peace Home and has already been involving the community in the building process through communal labour and informing during community meetings. Communal labour is extremely important to us in the building process to make sure the community feels a certain pride and responsibility towards Peace Home as a place in Busua. Aside from that, one committee member has been appointed as the contactperson for Peace Home to make sure the communication with the community runs smoothly. The Assembly Man is a busy man, so this assures everyone is always informed.
The energy on the land is positive and motivated! There's always music and food to keep the spirits high. So far, everyone involved in the construction is making the best experience out of it.

Sinds het ontstaan van het idee 'Peace Home' in 2019 en de opbouw sindsdien, is de droom om een dagcentrum voor jongeren met beperkingen te bouwen in Busua. Na veel hard werken en een aantal tegenslagen, komt de droom eindelijk tot leven! Hopelijk zijn jullie net zo enthousiast als het team van Peace Home en de gemeenschap.
Laten we beginnen bij de aankomst van Shalu en haar vader in Accra begin augustus.
Zij zijn meteen naar het huis van de projectleider gegaan die ons in contact heeft gebracht met de aannemer voor het dagcentrum, Delali. De organisatie waarvoor deze projectleider werkt, heeft al veel succesvolle projecten in Ghana opgebouwd en heeft ons al veel advies kunnen geven.
Twee weken later al, volgde Delali met zijn zeven werkers. Ze arriveerde bij Peace Home op 23 augustus. In die twee weken daarvoor heeft het Peace Home team hard gewerkt om het land voor te bereiden en uit te zoeken waar benodigde materialen konden worden verkregen.
De kamers boven de keuken waren al klaargemaakt voor hun aankomst en er stond al een maaltijd klaar voor ze na een lange reis van Accra naar Busua.
De volgende ochtend om 6 uur zijn ze begonnen met het afmeten van het land en het gebouw. Daardoor kon je meteen al zien hoe groot het gebouw zou worden en dat is overweldigend. Het graven begon kort daarna. De team leden van Peace Home, werkers en mensen van de gemeenschap die komen helpen, voegden zich samen en begonnen met het graven van de fundering.
Al snel merkten ze dat er veel grote stenen in de grond zitten wat het graven minder makkelijk maakt. Toch lukt het om de lijnen die zijn afgezet te graven in drie dagen!
De Assembly Man is samen met zijn comité leden ook veel langsgekomen tijdens het graven. Voor de bouw van start is gegaan heeft hij een comité member aangewezen als contactpersoon voor Peace Home, dus als de Assembly Man het druk heeft, wordt er zo gezorgd dat goede communicatie tussen het project en de gemeenschap te waarborgen. De Assembly Man heeft natuurlijk ook tijdens onze meetings begrepen dat er sprake moet zijn van communal labour. Hij heeft dit meegenomen in de community meetings en heeft het ook aangekondigd in het dorp.
Het is voor Peace Home belangrijk dat de gemeenschap een rol speelt in de bouw zodat ze zich ook trots en verantwoordelijk voelen voor Peace Home als project in Busua.
Tot nu toe is iedereen zeer enthousiast en helpt mee!
Er hangt een positieve en gemotiveerde energie op het land! Iedereen die tot nu toe betrokken is bij de bouw, maakt er de beste ervaring van. Er is altijd muziek en eten om de energy erin te houden.
